Shopping for car insurance in Reno can feel like comparing apples to oranges. With the right information and a few local considerations, you can pick a policy that protects both your car and your budget.
Know what Nevada law requires
Every vehicle registered in Nevada must carry at least this liability coverage:
- Bodily injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
- Property damage: $20,000 per accident.
That is usually written as 25/50/20. The Nevada DMV checks insurance electronically, so a lapse in coverage can lead to fines, a suspended registration and reinstatement fees. Keep in mind that the minimum only pays for damage you cause to others. It does nothing for your own car or your own injuries.
Think about how you actually drive in Reno
Liability alone is legal, but a few local realities are worth weighing:
- Winter roads. Snow and ice on I-80, Mt. Rose Highway and US-395 lead to more fender-benders from November to March. Collision coverage pays to fix your car when you’re at fault or when it’s a single-car accident.
- Wildlife, hail and windshields. Deer collisions in the foothills, hail storms and rock chips on the highway fall under comprehensive coverage, not collision.
- Uninsured drivers. Roughly 1 in 10 Nevada drivers has no insurance. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage protects you and your passengers if one of them hits you.
- Medical costs. Nevada is an at-fault state and doesn’t require personal injury protection. Medical payments coverage (MedPay) is an inexpensive way to cover your own and your passengers’ medical bills after a crash, no matter who caused it.
Compare more than one quote
Don’t take the first offer. Prices for the same driver and car can vary a lot between insurers, and so can the coverage behind them. Compare quotes with the same limits and deductibles so the comparison is fair. An independent agency like ours can do that for you across several carriers at once. See how it works on our Nevada car insurance page.
Ask about discounts
Insurers offer more discounts than they advertise. Common ones include:
- A clean driving record with no accidents or tickets.
- Anti-theft devices and newer safety features.
- Insuring several vehicles, or your car and your home or apartment, together.
- Good grades for student drivers.
A simple “Is there any discount I’m missing?” can make a real difference. We’ve collected the most useful ones in our guide on how to save on car insurance in Nevada.
Talk to someone local
Working with people who know Reno’s roads, weather and DMV makes the process easier, especially if your situation isn’t standard, like needing an SR-22 or quoting with an ITIN instead of a Social Security number.
